Dublin – Day 1 – Kilmainham Gaol

Can’t waste half a day if there’s still daylight. Next stop – Kilmainham Gaol Museum (jail/prison – still not sure which).  Took the LUAS to Kilmainham Gaol and ended up several blocks away.  Would’ve been closer if I had taken the bus, but… again, things don’t always go as planned.  As I’m walking toward the museum I stopped at The Natural Bakery for cheesecake and continued on to the gaol.   Upon arrival, I was told it would be a half hour until the next tour and directed toward the ticket counter.  Purchased my ticket and took the stairs to the café.

As always, excuse any typos as I’m writing from my phone.

This is the view from the café at the gaol.

The waiting area of the museum reminds me of the Whaley House in San Diego.

Interesting use of glass as part of the façade. Unusual but somehow it works.

The jail was designed in such a way that the guards could have eyes on all cells.  Who is watching who.  Have to keep in mind that if the guards can see all cells, the prisoners can also see the guards.  Not always a good idea when considering safety…
